Just this month my 2 1/2 year old toller started chewing on things when we are away. He started with my husbands scales (for straight razors) that he left on the counter to set, thank God it didnt have a razor attached at the time. He then progressed to the loofah in our bathtub about 5 days later. He went into our bath chewed it in the bath and left it in the bath. The next day he did the on in the other bathroom, the same way and left it in the bath as well. A week or so later my husband left the house for a half hour. When he came back the dog had chewed up a half dozen Christmas presents. He didnt ruin anything. After that we started crating him while we were away. We stopped crating him when he was about a year old if not before. He was always a good dog and the only time he ever chewed on stuff was when he was getting his back teeth in. Tonight we left him out of his crate shut all the doors in the house and put anything that he could get into away. I told my husband that if the dog chewed on anything it would be his fault and he would pay since he is the one who wanted to leave him out of his crate. We got home and everything looked good. I walked further into the living room when I noticed he had ripped off the blinds and chewed them up. He also ripped a sign off my sons door and chewed it up and upon further inspection he chewed my husbands baby book that was on the bookshelf and was still on the bookshelf when we got home. The door nob to our bedroom has also been chewed on but I am not sure when it was done. I am not sure what the problem is with my dog. I dont know what is going on but obviously we have to start crating him when we are away. I just dont know what started this behavior. _________________ Shamrock's A Stride Ahead (Strider) 7-22-07

Sorry to hear your having a problem
Is strider walked sufficiently before leaving him? Was he left before without a problem? Is it possible something is distressing him whilst you are out?
It may be worth keeping a log, day mon/tues/wed.. whether anything is running..dish washer, washing machine etc, Visitors...bin man, post man, etc., to see if there is a pattern. Also add if any thing you are feeling..stress, worry, flustered etc ...is being picked up by the dog. Then see if there is a pattern. May be worth a try.
..bit of an afterthought..I take it the tree isn't unsettling him...twinkly lights etc _________________ Decoymans Piper Dexter and Corlitgold Tawa

Could you possible leave a camcorder running just to see what he is doing? _________________ Janice with

You too? I think it might be that he's just bored. Before you leave, if you have time, take him for a long walk or tire him out by playing with a ball or toy that he likes. We've had sunglasses, goggles, loofahs, birthday bows, wicker baskets, and tons more gone. _________________ Luna |

WOW!! I think Murphy and London are relatives.
Sounds like you got him from Jean Gilroy? London's sire and dame are Sadie and Winston; I couldn't help but noticed the resemblance. If you could please post some pictures on my site, I’m sure Jean would love to see them.
London had a similar problem when we first got him, but we managed to break him of it. He’s fine now but his weakness is the couch pillows, we can’t leave them out. _________________ Jason J Cyr
