Amazon have three books about tollers, I just wondered if anyone could recommend one above the others?
They are:
Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever: Special Rare-breed Edition - A Comprehensive Owner's Guide by Nona Kilgore Bauer (Hardcover - Jan 2004)
(looks a bit basic to me tho)
The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever by Alison Strang and Gail MacMillan (Paperback - Dec 1996)
A Breed Apart: Nova Scotia's Duck Tolling Retriever by Gail MacMillan (Paperback - Jul 1998)
The second one is more recent, does that mean it's better? Or is there a better one that I haven't found?
I need something to get me through my long wait for a puppy! |

Excellent book and considered the 'Toller Bible'

A good book but is more about the history of the breed

Quite basic with a lot of the information very generic - but it has some great pictures in it not that I'm biased or anything _________________ Janice with

Ooh thanks!
I'll go for the Alison Strang and Gail MacMillan one for now then.
How much do you want to bet I end up with all of them before I even see a toller puppy? |

The best thing about the Nona Kilgore Bauer book is that it has my dogs in ! When the book was planned the photographer wanted someone with a range of dogs from veteran down to puppies so she came to Northumberland. It is my Solli launching herself into the pond, and also stealing the apple pie! It is more a basic dog book than a "toller" book though. The Alison Strang/Gail MacMillan one is the classic and copies are still around. _________________ Cathy, with tollers Newfanova Nordic Pizzazz, Newfanova Aurora at Shoredancer and Avonwharfe Grace at Shoredancer |

My Paddy is one of the puppies in it - like I said it's got some great pictures in it _________________ Janice with

Be careful of the prices on Amazon. Some of them are very high.
You can order brand new copies direct from Gail MacMillan. She loves hearing from other Toller owners and will autograph the books for you. The postage from Canada is not too bad.
Her website is
http://www.gailmacmillan.com/pages/nonfiction.html
You can click a link on the website to email her.
I was able to pay her in Canadian dollars through Paypal (same as for eBay). _________________ John & Janet Watton

Hi, thanks for the tips
I've emailed Gail who said I can buy them directly from her, she usually sells them as a set but I'm a bit skint this soon after xmas!
I'll probably just get the most recommended one for now, and order the others in a while.
I was expecting to be a bit better off this month cos my training column went in the local paper, which SHOULD have increased my business, except they haven't bothered to put my contact details on, or who I am |

I got an email from her saying the book has been shipped. She might possibly be the nicest person in the world!
She said she hopes I do get a toller and to let her know when that happens. I felt all choked |

Gail is amazing - she must be so busy but she always finds the time for a personal response! We've read her books from cover to cover!

To bad you can't read Dutch. Over here there is a great book about Tollers written by Judith Gieskens.

Also a lot of pictures, full color. Very nice also to see te different there is between the Tollers. _________________

Just a quick message to say that I mailed to Gail for the Nova Scotia book (the big one as I bought "a breed apart" before getting Emmi) and her last novel about Ceidilh.
She sent the two book directly in France with a nice autograph and ask me to pay (>Paypal) only when the books arrived.
She is really a good person. _________________
